When a big Mundo Utah forward used a rugby style tackle to drag me to the turf early in the first half, the message was clear: our opponent would play an intensely physical game. But as Mundo would soon discover, FHB was prepared to land several crushing blows of its own.
Entering the game, our plan was to take control immediately. Within a few minutes of the opening whistle, we had scored two goals and it appeared the route was on! But Mundo wasn't ready to concede. All the team from Salt Lake County needed to get back in the game were two brief, uncharacteristic mistakes by our defense. At halftime, the game was tied 2 - 2 and Mundo appeared to have momentum.
During the break, Coach Artigas gathered the team and made some critical adjustments to our plans. As we took to the field, he said he fully expected us to score three quick goals to lock up the game. The team responded aggressively. Within a few short minutes, we had seized the initiative and thoroughly controlled the remainder of the game. Coach had asked for three goals; we gave him four. In addition, our defense was all but impenetrable. Final score: Fox Hollow Brigade 6, Mundo Utah 2.
Without exaggerating, I can say that every one of our players who took the field contributed to the win. I'll mention just a few of the standout performances. Galo Artigas played a gritty game and score his first goal for the team. Our Captain, Alex Zamora, led the team with two goals - of course, we've come to expect that sort of performance from Alex. Jeremy Johnson sent a perfect (and I do mean perfect) cross into the box that Ryan Taggart forcefully headed into the back of the net. Late in the game, Kris Klingensmith hit a brilliant shot from distance that ignited a spontaneous celebration by his teammates on the pitch and our friends on the sideline. Finally, as the last few minutes of the game were ticking away, John Grant flew to our goal and made a spectacular save that preserved our second half shutout and sparked another raucous celebration.
Our players and our fans had a wonderful time at this exciting game. Yes, we definitely noticed our friends and family members cheering on the sideline. And we absolutely appreciate their support!
Through 2 games I believe the scoring breaks down as follows:
ReplyDeleteGame 1:
Alex Zamora with 2 goals
Ryan Taggart with 1 goal
Game 2:
Alex Zamora with 2 goals
Ryan Taggart with 1 goal
Kris Klingensmith with 1 goal
Gallo with 1 goal
Jeremy Johnson with 1 goal
I am uncertain on assists, but I know that Jeremy Johnson got 1 assist in game 2.
Also, I do not believe the defense has given up a second half goal yet and we have scored at least 3 goals in both of the second halfs of the games we have played in.
