I am very proud of our players, captains and coach. Today was our first game of the new season. For the first fifteen minutes, we obviously lacked energy and focus. Thirsty Dogs, our second division opponent, may have surprised us with their physical play (an aspect of their game we talked about, but weren't entirely prepared for.) We quickly found ourselves down 0 - 2. However, none of our guys gave up hope. Well before halftime, we had regrouped and were playing a much more aggressive style of football. Unfortunately, though we had several opportunities to score before the break, none of our shots found the back of the net.
Midway through the second half, Ryan Taggart ended our scoring drought. Alex Zamora drove home the equalizer and, with time running down, added the game winner! Many players contributed excellent performances; I'll mention just a few. Jeremy Johnson applied relentless pressure to Thirsty Dogs' back line. Sean Hetherington's pace and strength on the left side were very difficult for our opponent to match. Aaron Tucker was the match's iron man - he spent most of the game running to trouble spots. Chris Wade tormented the Dogs' midfield. Kris Klingensmith contributed a game-changing second-half performance. Adjustments made by Julio Artigas, our coach, during the second half produced real advantages.
There were so many good plays by so many hard-working players that I simply can't mention them all. Great effort from keepers, defenders, midfielders, forwards! It was a satisfying win and a tremendous start to the season! Congratulations to all who participated!
Here is a little perspective on our win over the Thirsty Dogs Saturday: they finished in third place in the second division last year: http://dev.utahsoccer.org/seasons/standings.
ReplyDeleteAlso, though the final score was 3-2 in our favor, we missed a ton of very good opportunities. As we sharpen up our finishing skills, we should score a lot of points.
